Very unusual mounted yari in tanto koshirae. We have seen this type of modified spear to be used and carried as a tanto at times. Small well made yari make a very formidable weapon in close quarters, very similar to having a ken sword as one’s tanto. The blade is in very good condition and quality, hamon of suguha with a very long turnback. Tang is slightly cutdown, but with the signature still intact except for a partial last kanji. Signature looks very correct and we have no reason to believe that it is nothing other than genuine. Blade has some small rust spots, but one can see everything very clearly. Blade is signed “ Mutsu no Kami Terumasa” and he is from the Famous Osaka Shinto School of Inouye Shinkai. A direct student of Kuniteru one of Shinkai’s best students, the nie in this blade is very bright and nice as they should be from this school.
The mountings are a aikuchi red and black lacquered mottled design that is very nice. A very well done gold kinpun mon is on both sides of the handle and in good condition. There is a small area on the bottom of te scabbard that has a chip in the lacquer, but otherwise in very nice original condition. An iron umabari accompanies the mount and is probably of the Higo School. All in all a very nice complete mount in original condition
